How should compression pants fit?

Close to the skin from hip to ankle with no pinching behind the knees. You should be able to squat and sprawl freely; if the waistband digs in or the fabric goes see-through, go up a size.

Can I wear them on their own?

For no-gi, many athletes wear spats alone or under fight shorts. Under a gi or board shorts, add compression shorts underneath for support and to keep everything in place.

How do I care for them so they last?

Wash cold, inside-out, skip fabric softener, and air dry out of direct heat. This helps the print, stretch and waistband stay in good shape.
