You train better when you don’t have to think about low blows. A solid groin guard cushions body kicks, wild knees and stray punches so you can stay on the round instead of bracing for impact. Pick from classic Thai and boxing cups, compression shorts with a cup pocket, and kids options from brands like Adidas, Rival, Shock Doctor, Sting, Venum, Viking, Everlast and Shinobi, with sizes from XS to 2XL and colours from black and white through to gold. Build a kit that makes sense for your sessions: add headgear or shin guards from our protective gear range, and if you run pads or help in class, check coaching for belly pads and shields that match your level of contact.
You want a snug waistband and the cup centered so it covers fully without gaps at the edges. You should be able to sprawl, pivot and throw knees without the cup shifting, pinching or causing numbness; if that happens, adjust the straps or go up a size.
Compression shorts keep the cup stable and feel comfortable under fight shorts, which many people like for MMA and BJJ. A traditional strap is simple, light and popular for Muay Thai and boxing; plenty of athletes use both and switch based on the session plan.
For hard body work and sparring in striking arts, many coaches recommend a steel or leather-covered steel cup for extra protection. For everyday MMA, BJJ and fitness classes, a well-made plastic or polycarbonate cup from a trusted brand is usually enough; follow your club rules and your coach’s advice.
